Psalm 42:11

"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."

The best remedy for shifting your disposition is praise. One of the greatest tools for dismantling discouragement is placing our hope in God and expressing it through exuberant praise.

Praise is the expression of honor and gratitude as an act of worship to God. It is not just a heartfelt song, an exhilarating dance, or words of admiration—it is a mindset.

In life, we will face challenges that can lead to discouragement, sadness, despair, or even depression. But God reminds us that we don’t have to remain in a downcast state. When we ask ourselves, Why am I feeling this way?, we open the door to deep reflection, allowing us to uncover the root of our emotions. This reflection also gives the Holy Spirit room to illuminate God’s Word, addressing whatever we are struggling with.

Unpacking what is often hidden can feel overwhelming, but it is a necessary practice to ensure that we remain hopeful in God and filled with praise. When our hearts are filled with hope and praise, there is no room for discouragement.

Remember to encourage and comfort yourself with the Word of the Lord. When you do, you will find that your soul is strengthened and your hope restored.

Reflection

Do you feel downcast? Why?

Do you believe God can help you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come to You because I know You love me and have given me the great privilege of casting all my cares upon You. Today, I surrender everything that weighs my soul down. I offer myself as a living sacrifice. Fill me with Your joy and peace as I put on the garment of praise. Lord, as I consider Your goodness and faithfulness, I pray that Your Holy Spirit will refresh my soul. In Jesus' name, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.:

If you’ve ever wondered what God's perfect will is for you, this passage sums it up in three powerful verses. God desires for us to experience and express real joy—not just sometimes, but always. His will is for us to live life as He intended, filled with His joy. However, experiencing joy can be difficult when so many emotions compete for our attention. True joy comes from the Lord, and when we reflect on His goodness, our hearts should be filled with overwhelming gratitude. We can carry joy and rejoice always if we keep our focus on Jesus.

God also wants us to stay in constant communication with Him through prayer. He desires not only to hear from us but also to speak to us. When we intentionally seek Him in prayer, we invite the Holy Spirit to comfort, uplift, encourage, strengthen, refresh, heal, and deliver us. Maintaining a strong connection and relationship with God should always be a priority.

Additionally, God calls us to express gratitude and be thankful regardless of our circumstances. Though this may seem challenging, it is not impossible. When we find even one thing to be thankful for, our perspective shifts from negativity to a focus on the positive. Too often, we take life’s necessities for granted until we no longer have them. God doesn’t want us to fixate on our circumstances because He is in control. When we maintain the right attitude in difficult situations, He is glorified.

We can be thankful in any situation because we trust that God works all things together for our good. His will for us is clear: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and live a life of gratitude—no matter what we experience in life.

Psalm 37:4 (ESV)

"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

What is the desire of your heart? This is a question that requires deep reflection and honesty. Take a moment to pause and ask yourself: What am I truly desiring?

If we reflect on all the things we've ever desired, we’ll realize that not everything was good for us. At times, we wanted something even when it wasn’t what God wanted for us. However, our top priority should be to please God and find great joy in Him.

God delights in those who choose obedience over fleeting pleasures. When we put Him first in every aspect of our lives, we experience a profound transformation in our thoughts, actions, and will. Prioritizing the will of our Father reshapes our desires to align with His.

The more we seek to please God, the more our lives align with His Word, and His desires become our own. He has great things in store for us. Scripture is clear about the plans He has for us and the wonderful things He is doing—and will continue to do.

Delight in God, even when you don’t receive what you want right away. Perhaps He is working in you and preparing something greater for you.
