Matthew 18:21-22
"Then Peter came up and said to him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.’"
Peter asked a question that we all wrestle with at some point: How often must we forgive someone who repeatedly wrongs us? Jesus’ response made it clear—there is no limit to forgiveness. This can be difficult to grasp, especially when we are hurt by the same person over and over again.
Jesus demonstrated the depth of forgiveness when, from the cross, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” If Christ is willing to forgive us when we seek His mercy, we too must walk in that same grace. We cannot truly imitate Christ without practicing forgiveness.
Forgiveness is not only for those who have wronged us—it is also a reminder that we, too, fall short of God's glory and are in constant need of His forgiveness. It is a powerful gift we have received and are now called to extend to others. When forgiveness feels difficult, ask the Holy Spirit to help you.
