Character building moments

Colossians 3:12 NIV

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

I can remember growing up hearing my mother's voice calling to me to do things I know she could do, whether it was bringing a remote that was less than 2 feet away, turning off her light, or grabbing her something that she needed. I always thought to myself, but never out loud, why in the world is she calling me to do something she is able to do herself? Well, as the years went by and I had children of my own, I found myself doing the same thing. I saw things in my children I wanted to develop. Patience, humility, and a willingness to serve others were important characteristics. I now discovered that she wasn't being lazy or on a power trip but she was building my character.

When God calls us to do something we may feel we don't want or need to do, it doesn't create the opportunity for us to grow. We tend to murmur in our hearts. If we want to be more like Christ, we have to model and put into practice His response to an assignment. Just like Jesus, we need to desire the will of our Father over our own. No matter how small or large the task, we have to be willing to answer the call.

Do your best not to ignore, delegate, or do it grudgingly. It's true, some tasks are less desirable than others. However, when you know that you are fulfilling a task for your Father, it should take the focus off of YOU and shift it to HIM.

So, the next time you are being asked to do something less desirable, remember who is asking.
