Matthew 19:21-22 21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Jesus is near to all those who desire to truly know and follow him. The word declares if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is lord, you will be saved. Yet, being ‘saved’ is just the beginning. We are saved to make a difference and impact in the lives of those that are around us. There is a responsibility that comes with accepting Jesus as our savior. Our personal confession becomes a public testimony that others can see. The life we lead should be shared by those that need what we have not just what we are willing to give.
Jesus spoke to a rich young ruler who have been following the commandments from a child. Yet, he knew that there was something that he was lacking on the inside. Jesus gave him the remedy. In order to be made perfect, he must strip himself from what he valued the most that got in the way of him completely surrendering all…his wealth. It’s what we value the most that we should be willing to share or give up. Whatever we have, we can’t be afraid of letting it go if that is what Jesus requires.
If we truly want to be made perfect, it compels us to go the extra mile and do what might seem the insufferable. For this young ruler it was his money, but for many of us we find it hard to part from those things that we treasure. There are some things that we are not willing to part with because it gives us a sense of security, confidence or identity. Nevertheless, if we truly want to follow Christ there are things, we need to let go of so he can fully have a hold on our hearts. Jesus want to replace the falsehoods in our lives with the reality of what he brings to us.
If you are struggling to let go of something that you know is getting in the way of you completely surrendering all to Jesus tell him. Don’t walk away like the young man, but ask the Lord to help you let it go. When you ask the Lord to help you see that all you could ever need is in him, the grip will loosen and what you were holding out to will slowly begin to slip away. Jesus is the greatest treasure that we can ever obtain and in order to really seek him you have to forsake all that is holding you back.
