Matthew 21:18-19 18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.
No one likes to be misled, especially during our most vulnerable moments. Jesus approached a fig tree because from a distance it looked like it had what he needed. However, when he came closer, he noticed that there were only leaves and what he desired was missing. This was unusual for a fig tree and it was clear it was not serving its purpose. Fig trees normally bear fruit first before leaves are present. When Jesus saw that this tree was showing leaves only, he had to address the disorder and forbid it from bearing fruit again.
We need to identify the ‘fig trees’ in our lives that serves no purpose or does not bear fruit. In order to move forward we have to recognize those things that are holding us back from getting where we want to go in life. When things show up in our lives that does not serve in our Kingdom purpose but rather a stumbling block, we must remove it.
The ‘fig tree’ come in many forms. They show themselves in old philosophies, belief systems, ungodly habits and relationships. Anything that is appearing to be good for us but it isn’t should be quickly uprooted and eradicated from our lives. We must be careful not to be misled or be deceived by appearances. In this season, God is exposing falsehoods that is trying to mask as the truth. Beware of the un-bearing fig trees and cling to the word of God.
