John 20:25-29 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
We often hear the phrase “Seeing is Believing”. We refuse to consider or accept information that goes beyond our natural reasoning. As humans we are comfortable receiving and responding through our natural senses. Anything that challenges our senses and logic goes under extreme scrutiny, especially things that seem impossible. Simply put, we rely on what we see or witness as oppose to what we are being told.
Thomas, was one of the 12 disciples that followed Jesus and his teachings. He was exposed to signs, wonders and witnessed the many miracles of healing and deliverance that Jesus administer during his ministry. Yet, hearing from his fellow brothers in the faith wasn’t enough to convince him of Jesus resurrection. Although, Jesus throughout scripture mention several times that he will suffer many things and be crucified, he will rise again.
Like Thomas we want to see “it” to order to believe “it”. Even in those instances when our faith refuses to reach beyond our understanding, Jesus is readily available to meet us and close the gap. He encourages us to not doubt but to trust his words.
On the other hand, Jesus makes it very clear that those that choose to believe without material evidence will be blessed. Having faith is important to God and he understands that it isn’t always easy to be resilient when things appear impossible. Nevertheless, our Faith in God pushes us beyond our natural barriers and into the spiritual realm. When we shift from our natural to spiritual senses, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities and wonderful blessings in God.
