Matthew 26:36-39 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” 39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
Jesus invited his disciples to watch and pray, but he never invited them to stand with him in prayer. They didn’t hold hands in a circle or rally around him to ward off the feeling of deep distress and sorrow. This was the one thing that he couldn’t share with them. Jesus had to be alone with his Father before enduring the cross.
There will be times in our lives when we will have our own Gethsemane experience. We will be faced with challenges and difficulties that we believe is too great of a burden to bear alone. Yet God will cause us to stand alone in order to stand in him. During our journey we will have to make the tough decision to bear the weight of what he is calling us to do and stand on the side of his will. When we submit to His will, he will give us the grace and strength we need to overcome the desire to abort his plans for our own. Standing alone might seem lonely but it’s the best place to be to hear God and drown out the noise.
