Secure the Word

Read: Matthew 13: 1-9;18-23 AMP

Scripture highlight: 13:23 AMP “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands and grasps it; he indeed bears fruit and yields, some a hundred times [as much as was sown], some sixty [times as much], and some thirty.”

The parable of the seed and sower told by Jesus in the book of Matthew is a revealing story that speaks about the importance of being intentional with the word of God. To explain kingdom principles, Jesus would use simple stories to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson that he wanted his followers to learn. In this story, Jesus addresses how sowing seeds (the word of God) on good ground (our hearts) will release tremendous blessings.

When we receive kingdom principles and truths, the word of God must be kept safely in our hearts so that we are careful to follow them. A seed is always vulnerable when its planted. Yet, if it is planted in good soil, watered daily, and cared for, it will take root and begin to grow. Likewise, when the word of God touches our hearts, we must take the care to nurture it by receiving and meditating on it. If we allow it to settle, the word will begin to take root. When roots are firm they become deeply grounded and cannot be easily extracted.

Therefore, when the word is firmly planted in our hearts, we can begin to exercise our faith.

However, the scripture warns us about the dangers of not securing the word of God properly in our hearts. It will be susceptible to the cares of life and our adversary who seeks to kill, steal, and ultimately destroy it. We cannot allow the enemy to take our most valuable possession, our faith in God. If we are not careful to protect the word, he will do whatever it takes to leave us hopeless and faithless. And without faith, it’s impossible to please God.

Take a moment to thank God for the precious Holy Spirit. He is our helper that provides the enabling grace to remain in the Word. When we apply the word of God to our lives we grow in power through faith. The more we have confidence in God through his word, we are strengthening the roots of our relationship and weakening the power of the enemy.
