Psalms 118:8 “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put your confidence in man”
Disappointment is the sadness or displeasure caused by the non-fulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations. In life, we all can attest that we have experienced more disappointments over the years than we would want to admit.
There were so many things we can look back on and create a list of everyone that made promises but never came through. People that we admired and respected but later discovered that they were not what they seemed. Or even coming to the realization that our circle of trust is shrinking by the day. However, we cannot leave ourselves out of the equation. There were times we let ourselves down by making the wrong decisions or acted in haste that went against everything we believe in.
If we don’t come to terms with addressing the disappointments in our lives they will limit us. Scars can lead to an impression in our mind and heart telling us to never build up our hopes again. It will warn us against having expectations, because if we do, we will be gravely disappointed when things don’t turn out the way we wanted. Our minds will be consumed by what others have done to us in the past that we forget what God is doing for us now despite what we have gone through.
Disappointments will come from those that are the closest to us but that should be expected. They are not God. We are all human and we make human mistakes and promises that we cannot keep sometimes. We have to accept that people aren’t perfect and although they mean well, they will sometimes fail us. That doesn’t mean they don’t care or love us, it just shows their fragility.
We should not hold people and ourselves hostage to past mishaps; we need to forgive, reset and move forward. When it’s all said and done our dependence should ultimately rest in and with God. We have to let go of the hurt of our disappointments and focus our confidence in the one who’s arm will never fail.
