Matthew 4:18-22 NIV 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Have you ever got a tug in your spirit telling you that need to do something that is uncomfortable? That tug often turns out to be the Holy Spirit nudging us to come out of our comfort zone. Sometimes the Lord will minister to us through his word, a sermon, during our time of prayer or while we are in deep worship about what he has called us to do. We get convicted in the moment but later question the call because it seems like a huge ask.
In today’s scripture, we see Jesus at the start of his ministry calling forth four fishermen to become his disciples. They were skilled at what they did and Jesus saw an opportunity to shift them into what they were really called to do; to be skilled fishers of men who will one day start his Church.
In life, everything we have learned and encountered is designed to prepare us for what we are called to do. They become stepping stones to where God wants us to be. Whatever skill set that we have cultivated and acquired over the years can be used to advance the Kingdom of God when we submit to his will.
If you know that God is tugging on you to follow him in an unfamiliar area, don’t hesitate. He is leading you into something greater. For some of us it might be a career change, for others it might be embarking on a new ministry idea. But, whatever he is asking you to leave in order to follow him is worth it. The disciples saw their opportunity right away to follow the Son of God. The bible says that they immediately left their nets and family members to pursue the call of God.
Some of us are called to the marketplace where we can be effective and integral part in advancing the Kingdom of God, while others are called to ministry. Where ever you are called, God wants you to make an impact. So, if you know that what you are currently doing is not where you will ultimately land, then begin to start seeking God for insight to help you shift into what he is calling you to do.
